The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped outermost layer that covers the iris and pupil, playing a vital role in focusing light into the eye. Though transparent, the cornea is made up of an intricate structure of five distinct layers:
Epithelium – The outermost protective layer
Bowman’s Layer – Strengthens and protects the eye
Stroma – The thickest layer, composed of organized collagen fibers
Descemet’s Membrane – A thin protective barrier
Endothelium – Maintains corneal clarity by pumping out excess fluid
Unlike most tissues in the body, the cornea does not have blood vessels, which helps maintain its clarity. Instead, it receives nourishment and oxygen from tear fluid and the aqueous humor, the fluid found in the front chamber of the eye.
